- 1Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:Διοδεύσαντες δὲ τὴν Ἀμφίπολιν καὶ ⸀τὴν Ἀπολλωνίαν ἦλθον εἰς Θεσσαλονίκην ὅπου ⸀ἦν συναγωγὴ τῶν Ἰουδαίων
- 2And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,κατὰ δὲ τὸ τῷ Παύλῳ εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐπὶ σάββατα τρία διελέξατο αὐτοῖς ἀπὸ τῶν γραφῶν
- 3Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.διανοίγων καὶ παρατιθέμενος ὅτι τὸν χριστὸν ἔδει παθεῖν καὶ ἀναστῆναι ἐκ νεκρῶν καὶ ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ⸂ὁ χριστός ὁ⸃ Ἰησοῦς ὃν ἐγὼ καταγγέλλω ὑμῖν
- 4And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.καί ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐπείσθησαν καὶ τῷ Παύλῳ καὶ τῷ Σιλᾷ τῶν τε σεβομένων Ἑλλήνων ⸂πλῆθος πολὺ⸃ γυναικῶν τε τῶν πρώτων οὐκ ὀλίγαι
- 5But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.⸂ζηλώσαντες δὲ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ τῶν ἀγοραίων ⸂ἄνδρας πονηροὺς καὶ ὀχλοποιήσαντες ἐθορύβουν τὴν πόλιν ⸂καὶ ἐπιστάντες⸃ τῇ οἰκίᾳ Ἰάσονος ἐζήτουν αὐτοὺς ⸀προαγαγεῖν εἰς τὸν δῆμον
- 6And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;μὴ εὑρόντες δὲ αὐτοὺς ⸀ἔσυρον Ἰάσονα καί ἀδελφοὺς ἐπὶ τοὺς πολιτάρχας βοῶντες ὅτι Οἱ τὴν οἰκουμένην ἀναστατώσαντες οὗτοι καὶ ἐνθάδε πάρεισιν
- 7Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.οὓς ὑποδέδεκται Ἰάσων καὶ οὗτοι πάντες ἀπέναντι τῶν δογμάτων Καίσαρος πράσσουσι βασιλέα ⸂ἕτερον λέγοντες⸃ εἶναι Ἰησοῦν
- 8And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.ἐτάραξαν δὲ τὸν ὄχλον καὶ τοὺς πολιτάρχας ἀκούοντας ταῦτα
- 9And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.καὶ λαβόντες τὸ ἱκανὸν παρὰ τοῦ Ἰάσονος καὶ τῶν ἀπέλυσαν αὐτούς
- 10And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.Οἱ δὲ ἀδελφοὶ εὐθέως ⸀διὰ νυκτὸς ἐξέπεμψαν τόν τε Παῦλον καὶ τὸν Σιλᾶν εἰς Βέροιαν οἵτινες παραγενόμενοι εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν ⸂τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἀπῄεσαν⸃
- 11These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.οὗτοι δὲ ἦσαν εὐγενέστεροι τῶν ἐν Θεσσαλονίκῃ οἵτινες ἐδέξαντο τὸν λόγον μετὰ πάσης προθυμίας ⸀τὸ καθ’ ἡμέραν ἀνακρίνοντες τὰς γραφὰς εἰ ἔχοι ταῦτα
- 12Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.πολλοὶ μὲν οὖν ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐπίστευσαν καὶ τῶν Ἑλληνίδων γυναικῶν τῶν εὐσχημόνων καὶ ἀνδρῶν οὐκ ὀλίγοι
- 13But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.ὡς δὲ ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἀπὸ τῆς Θεσσαλονίκης Ἰουδαῖοι ὅτι καὶ ἐν τῇ Βεροίᾳ κατηγγέλη ὑπὸ τοῦ Παύλου ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ ἦλθον κἀκεῖ σαλεύοντες ⸂καὶ ταράσσοντες⸃ τοὺς ὄχλους
- 14And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.εὐθέως δὲ τότε τὸν Παῦλον ἐξαπέστειλαν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ πορεύεσθαι ⸀ἕως ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν ⸂ὑπέμεινάν τε⸃ ὅ τε καὶ ὁ Τιμόθεος ἐκεῖ
- 15And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.οἱ δὲ ⸀καθιστάνοντες τὸν Παῦλον ⸀ἤγαγον ἕως Ἀθηνῶν καὶ λαβόντες ἐντολὴν πρὸς τὸν Σιλᾶν καὶ ⸀τὸν Τιμόθεον ἵνα ὡς τάχιστα ἔλθωσιν πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐξῄεσαν
- 16Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.Ἐν δὲ ταῖς Ἀθήναις ἐκδεχομένου αὐτοὺς τοῦ Παύλου τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ ⸀θεωροῦντος κατείδωλον οὖσαν τὴν πόλιν
- 17Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.διελέγετο μὲν οὖν ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις καὶ τοῖς σεβομένοις καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀγορᾷ κατὰ πᾶσαν ἡμέραν πρὸς τοὺς παρατυγχάνοντας
- 18Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.δὲ καὶ τῶν Ἐπικουρείων ⸀καὶ φιλοσόφων συνέβαλλον αὐτῷ καί ἔλεγον Τί ἂν θέλοι ὁ σπερμολόγος οὗτος λέγειν οἱ δέ Ξένων δαιμονίων δοκεῖ καταγγελεὺς εἶναι ὅτι τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ τὴν ἀνάστασιν εὐηγγελίζετο
- 19And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?ἐπιλαβόμενοί ⸀τε αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸν ἤγαγον λέγοντες Δυνάμεθα γνῶναι τίς ἡ καινὴ αὕτη ἡ ὑπὸ σοῦ λαλουμένη διδαχή
- 20For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.ξενίζοντα γάρ εἰσφέρεις εἰς τὰς ἀκοὰς ἡμῶν βουλόμεθα οὖν γνῶναι ⸂τίνα θέλει⸃ ταῦτα εἶναι
- 21(For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)Ἀθηναῖοι δὲ πάντες καὶ οἱ ἐπιδημοῦντες ξένοι εἰς οὐδὲν ἕτερον ηὐκαίρουν ἢ λέγειν ⸀ἢ ἀκούειν καινότερον
- 22Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.Σταθεὶς ⸀δὲ Παῦλος ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ ἔφη Ἄνδρες Ἀθηναῖοι κατὰ πάντα ὡς ὑμᾶς θεωρῶ
- 23For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.διερχόμενος γὰρ καὶ ἀναθεωρῶν τὰ σεβάσματα ὑμῶν εὗρον καὶ βωμὸν ἐν ᾧ ἐπεγέγραπτο Ἀγνώστῳ θεῷ ⸀ὃ οὖν ἀγνοοῦντες εὐσεβεῖτε ⸀τοῦτο ἐγὼ καταγγέλλω ὑμῖν
- 24God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;ὁ θεὸς ὁ ποιήσας τὸν κόσμον καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν αὐτῷ οὗτος οὐρανοῦ καὶ γῆς ⸂ὑπάρχων κύριος⸃ οὐκ ἐν χειροποιήτοις ναοῖς κατοικεῖ
- 25Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;οὐδὲ ὑπὸ χειρῶν ⸀ἀνθρωπίνων θεραπεύεται προσδεόμενός αὐτὸς διδοὺς πᾶσι ζωὴν καὶ πνοὴν ⸂καὶ τὰ⸃ πάντα
- 26And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;ἐποίησέν τε ἐξ ⸀ἑνὸς πᾶν ἔθνος ἀνθρώπων κατοικεῖν ἐπὶ ⸂παντὸς προσώπου⸃ τῆς γῆς ὁρίσας προστεταγμένους καιροὺς καὶ τὰς ὁροθεσίας τῆς κατοικίας αὐτῶν
- 27That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:ζητεῖν τὸν ⸀θεὸν εἰ ἄρα γε ψηλαφήσειαν αὐτὸν καὶ εὕροιεν καί γε οὐ μακρὰν ἀπὸ ἑνὸς ἑκάστου ἡμῶν ὑπάρχοντα
- 28For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.ἐν αὐτῷ γὰρ ζῶμεν καὶ κινούμεθα καὶ ἐσμέν ὡς καί τῶν καθ’ ὑμᾶς ποιητῶν εἰρήκασιν Τοῦ γὰρ καὶ γένος ἐσμέν
- 29Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.γένος οὖν ὑπάρχοντες τοῦ θεοῦ οὐκ ὀφείλομεν νομίζειν χρυσῷ ἢ ἀργύρῳ ἢ λίθῳ χαράγματι τέχνης καὶ ἐνθυμήσεως ἀνθρώπου τὸ θεῖον εἶναι ὅμοιον
- 30And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:τοὺς μὲν οὖν χρόνους τῆς ἀγνοίας ὁ θεὸς τὰ νῦν ⸀παραγγέλλει τοῖς ἀνθρώποις ⸀πάντας πανταχοῦ μετανοεῖν
- 31Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.⸀καθότι ἔστησεν ἡμέραν ἐν ᾗ μέλλει κρίνειν τὴν οἰκουμένην ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ ἐν ἀνδρὶ ᾧ ὥρισεν πίστιν παρασχὼν πᾶσιν ἀναστήσας αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν
